(MIAMI, July 27, 2009) – In an enormous collaborative effort, on Sunday, July 26th, Miami-Dade Animal Services joined forces with local veterinarian, Dr. Mike Tenzer of South Beach Animal Hospital, The Cat Network, Inc. and SOBE Spay/Neuter to spay & neuter 74 feral and stray cats in Miami Beach.  The cats were also vaccinated against rabies.

“It was an honor for South Beach Animal Hospital to host this unprecedented event in Miami Beach to help reduce the cat overpopulation.  As part of this community, I felt compelled to be part of this initiative and help control the feral cat colonies in Miami Beach,” said Dr. Mike Tenzer, owner of South Beach Animal Hospital.

The successful event was sponsored by Intervet/Schering Plough, who paid for the pharmaceuticals and  local veterinarians and technicians donated their time.  Volunteers from The Cat Network and SOBE Spay/Neuter who helped trap the feral cats and cared for their post surgical recovery that made this event possible and a success.

“There is an overpopulation crisis in our community of companion animals and we look forward to creating more collaborative partnerships in the future.  We are thrilled with the success of this event”, reported Dr. Sara Pizano, Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services.

Miami-Dade Animal Services is responsible for enforcing Chapter V, as well as Florida Statutes 828, which deals primarily with animal cruelty issues.  Unlike private shelters that have limitations on the number of pets they accept, Animal Services accepts all dogs and cats. Each year, the shelter impounds more than 34,000 pets.  The goal at Animal Services is to reunite lost pets with their families or find life-long homes for as many animals as possible.  Related links: www.miamidade.gov/animals  or call 311

That is nice to see the vets in Miami making an effort for the cats roaming the streets to be safe for interaction.
